Regarding smoke at idle, I take it this happens immediately after starting the engine. Check for a pre-heat on the engine and use it. 1 minute pre-heat for cold engines, 30 seconds for warm engines - this will reduce or eliminate smoke after start up.
In general terms, all purely mechanical turbo-charged engines are highly over-fuelled at idle which is why manufacturers recommend not to run for any length of time at idle unless under load ie. in gear and motoring.
Running an engine at idle will glaze the bores of your enigne and cause it to us more oil so if you need to charge batteries then go out for a run or use a marine battery charger and generator.
Hope this info is of some use; you may already know all this.
Have a good day and looking forward to your pics - the season has just begun!
