Hi all,

I have 1989 Volvo TDM 122C's on my Princess 55. According to sales brochure, they are rated at 480 HP (US). According to my mechanic they are rated at 385 HP. According to Volvo's "discontinued engines" list on their website they have no horse power at all as Volvo lists only 122A/B (at around 350 HP) and a 122D with 600 HP.

Any info as to real power ratings of those 122C's ?

Thanks from Newport Beach in sunny Southern California.
David

Hi David,
I also have a Pr 55 built 1989. As I was sold 480 hp:s and later found out that they are only 450 hp, I spent some time checking this matter.
TAMD 122C:s give 480 hp, My engines are produced somewhere between A and C and are accordingly called Tamd A/C and rated 450 hp. My engine nrs. are 1101021114 (serial 147691) and 1101021120 (serial 147690).
There could be a difference in power declarations in US and Europe. 480 hp is for sure the rated power in Europe for the last Tamd 122C version.
American power declarations in the past were sometimes SAE which give a lower power rating than DIN which is the norm here.

By the way I bought a new water pump from:

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for your reply. My P55 was purchased in Europe and later privately imported into US. Therefor all HP ratings on its original papers should be DIN based. I am getting about 22-24 nautical miles at WOT with 2000 to 2050 RPM and a 3/4 loaded boat. Maybe that might tell a little about HP of engines.

I am curious as to why VP does not list a TAMD122C on its website.

May the weather god blow some of our moderate climate over Finland. I was in Helsinki many, many years ago.

David

I cruise 19-20 knots at 1600-1650 rpm. Top 26-27 knots 1900-1950 rpm with holiday gear on board. I'm sending the props to Teignbridge next week to tweak the last 50-100 rpm missing from the top.

cheers,
Stefan

It does say very clearly on the original Princess engine installation sheets that they are 122C's.

Maybe the props are not optimal or I have too much gear and junk on board.

Rigid bottom dinghy with 25HP electric start on the davits, diving gear, full home theater setup with a 42" plasma TV with Harman Kardon sound system with 2 subwoofers, CLOTHING (lots of it) for 3 females, fully enclosed cockpit and flybridge etc.

By the way, if you are interested, there is a great spot for a TV lift behind the 2-seater sofa. I can send you pics of my install if you explain how to include pics.

Thanks, David

Stefan,

By the way, by looking at the pic for the 122A you send me, the transmission, oil filters and general appearance of my engine looks exactly like the 122D Volvo has on its website and not like the 122A.

Maybe I have a hidden 122D Smile

David
